Kitten season is here!

Kitten Season is here again and local shelters are  seeing an increase in pregnant, nursing mother cats and very young orphaned kittens entering their systems.

North Texas Cat Rescue (NTCR) is committed to rescue as many kitties as our foster homes space allows but we can’t do it alone: we need you and most importantly the kitties need you!

If you prefer fostering an older kitten/cat .... that is great too!

Foster commitment time varies depending on foster cats

1. Kittens: need to be fostered until they reach 2lbs or 8 weeks - which ever comes first. Then they will be altered. We require the kittens be fostered for 1 more week after surgery to allow for recovery. The kittens will then be coming to the adoption center. Minimum 2 kittens – best for socialization-, maximum 1 litter of 5 or 6 per foster home.
2. Pregnant mother: requires a quiet environment for birth and raising of her kittens. Longer commitment: days or a couple of weeks before birth and 8 weeks after birth. The mom and kittens will then be scheduled to be altered.
3. Nursing mom: kittens will be altered when weaned @ 2lbs or 8 weeks 1 pregnant or 1 nursing mom per foster home.

ALL CATS ARE TESTED FOR FELV/FIV,VACCINATED, WORMED AND DEFLEAD PRIOR PLACEMENT IN FOSTER HOMES.

Foster parents should commit to foster cats/kittens until adopted (NTCR will work with you if not possible: we do not desire to overwhelm you) In some cases, it might take several weeks for our adult cats to find their permanent homes so fostering time might be longer for those. Some kittens/adults may need more time in foster care if they need to recover from illnesses like Upper Respiratory Infection and/or diarrhea.Sometimes cat(s) that are adopted need to be returned by the new owners to NTCR. The foster parent should be willing to take the cat back if at all possible until he/she is adopted.Foster parents should bring the cats/kittens to adoption sites at least twice a month.

Skills

• Love for cats and lots of TLC!
• Space to keep fosters separated from your own pets for at least 10 days
• 1 hour a day to feed, clean and socialize the cats/kittens
• All owned pets must be current on immunizations

NTCR will help with food if needed. Meds and vet care will be provided by NTCR. Experience with baby orphaned kittens a plus. Being able to medicate (pills, drops....), administer Sub-Q fluids when needed, tube-feeding are A MUST (2 – 3 weeks old kittens are very fragile and need round the clock care).
